Weather forecast by numerical weather prediction models

Conclusions

For example the percentage of cloud cover as well as heights of bases and tops of clouds are decisive factors for planning of air operations. The wave height and the wind in a specific area of the Aegean Sea are very important information for navy operations. The wind and temperature forecast, not only on the surface but also at all the heights of the atmosphere is an essential prerequisite for a successful artillery fire. However, beyond the armed forces there are several other areas that demand precise weather forecasting:

  • The support of important athletic events such as the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004, which will demand weather forecasts of very small space and time scale.
  • Agriculture, for the protection of cultivations against severe weather phenomena.
  • Transportation (sea, air and land), for the safety of passengers and goods.
  • Tourism, for better programming of transportation and stay of tourists.
  • Public works, for better programming and definition of construction limits.

The development and operational use of up-to-date weather models will significantly contribute to the improvement of weather forecast, mainly in local level, and consequently to the more efficient support of armed forces and most branches of National Economy. The progress that has been accomplished in HNMS in the area of numerical weather modelling during the last few years is very important. The Service has been equipped with latter-day computer systems, has started co-operations with Universities and oher countries’ Meteorological Services, the personnel has attained the necessary know-how in the specific field, three local area weather models have been installed and are currently used operationally or for research purposes and footing has been put for further development of the Service in this specific very important area.
